AJISS Technical Spec Writer (Mechanical)

Position Summary

As part of the AJISS Coastal Support team, the Technical Specification Writer will support the Royal Canadian Navy Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) and Joint Support Ship (JSS) class vessels managed by Thales under the AJISS contract. Accountable to the Resource Manager - Coastal Support and responsive to the Coastal Engineering Services Manager, the Technical Specification Writer supports Service Delivery and Engineering teams by writing specifications and Statements of Work (SOWs) for corrective maintenance of various systems and equipment. This includes ensuring Class Society and objective quality evidence (OQE) requirements are captured. The role frequently liaises with ship staff and Fleet Maintenance Facility (FMF) work centers.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or US Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Develop work instructions and Statements of Work (SOW) to support resolution of defects.
• Liaise with OEMs, service providers, FMF work centers and ship staff to understand defects and required repairs.
• Conduct investigations on board ships while alongside or within the Technical Document Package (TDP).
• Communicate inadequacies within the TDP and propose improvements/corrections to support LCMM & Engineering.
• Create Deviations & Waivers as corrective maintenance activities are planned and executed.
• Support Service Delivery with management of service providers conducting corrective maintenance on board ships.
• Develop working relationships within Thales and the customer organization to ensure coordination and rapid resolution of defects.
• Identify materiel required to resolve defects and place demands against associated jobs within Thales' Maintenance Management Information System.

Minimum Requirements

• 2-year technical diploma in a mechanical field from a recognized technical institute; or USQ-S1 Mechanical Technician / Military QL5 certification in an approved mechanical trade.
• Minimum of 3 years technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years.
• Strong knowledge of maintenance, operation, design and/or troubleshooting of a wide range of marine mechanical systems.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Team player.
• Fluent in English.
• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3-year technical diploma in a mechanical field from a recognized technical institute.
• Certified technologist by a recognized provincial, state, or national licensing body in a relevant mechanical field.
• Certification as one of the following Canadian Armed Forces marine technical trades: RQ-PO1 or RQ-PO2 Marine Technician; QL 6A or 7 Marine Engineer.
• Minimum of 5 years technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years.
• Familiarity with workplace health and safety requirements, particularly LOTO, Hot Work and Confined Space procedures.
• Previous experience working with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard.
• Familiarity with certification requirements such as Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code and DND regulations is an asset.
• DRMIS experience is an asset.

Physical Demands

• Combination of office work and work in dockyards and onboard naval ships.
• Inspections in machinery spaces requiring bending and twisting.
• Willingness to work aloft and in confined spaces on board ships (training provided).

Special Position Requirements

• Schedule: 40 hours per week.
• Work Location: Hybrid — required to work from the Halifax dockyard (almost 100% of the time when a ship is alongside) and from home/Thales office when no ships are alongside.
• Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships or the AJISS/MWAV Enterprise.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) $90,000 - $115,000 - $130 CAD Annual. This range is one data point among many used to make pay decisions; placement within the range depends on factors such as career history, competencies, skills, performance, company salary budget, program requirements, and internal equity. Thales may offer additional benefits and compensation depending on circumstances not related to protected applicant status.
