Position Summary

The Aerospace Software Development Team Leader provides leadership for a group of software specialists composed of 20 to 30 team members, including software architects, software specialists, and work package managers. This team plans, organizes, and manages the development and implementation of critical embedded software and hardware, as well as their certification under DO-178C and DO-297 with authorities such as the FAA, EASA, and TCCA.

The Aeronautical Software Development Team Leader ensures the professional development of the various team members, validates the development plan established by each individual, and monitors their progress by offering advice and solutions.

The team is also responsible for the development of associated software tools under DO-330 and DO-331, including those required to support model-based systems engineering developments enabling process automation.

In collaboration with other Engineering managers, Quality department, and program management, the Aeronautical Software Development Team Leader plays both a strategic and tactical role in the development of embedded systems for the markets served by Thales Avionics. Since the development is conducted collaboratively and internationally between Canada and France, the Team Leader will ensure the smooth operation of these developments through close cooperation with his French counterparts.

Essential Functions

  • Plan and monitor activities related to compliance with development standards to ensure the smooth progress of projects, respecting the functional and performance scope, internal and client milestones, as well as implementation costs;
  • Manage software and hardware team resources (budget, HR); ensure the adequacy of resources and necessary skills for the various projects;
  • Ensure the professional development of the team;
  • Identify and evaluate critical expertise;
  • Organize this expertise into networks of experts/specialists and ensure they are recognized;
  • Ensure the increase of skills and the alignment of workload and resources;
  • Provide the necessary reports to project managers and senior management;
  • Plan and monitor upstream Research & Technology activities for future embedded systems;
  • Define innovative and attractive solutions for our clients, prepare and coordinate software and hardware quotes to build winning proposals;
  • Improve the team's competitiveness throughout the entire product lifecycle (specifications, technical proposals, improved methods);
  • Provide active technological monitoring of methodologies and tools likely to increase development efficiency:
    • Ensuring the deployment and maintenance of "Thales Engineering Environment" engineering tools;
    • Automating the entire software production chain;
  • Present and defend Thales' development process with various certification authorities;
  • Ensure teams comply with certification bases (Standards DO-178B/C, DO-254, DO-297, DO-330, DO-331 and CRI, applicable IP and FAA);
  • Apply and enforce the company's product policy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in electrical or software engineering;
  • 10 years of experience in embedded critical system development or equivalent;
  • Knowledge and application of DO-178;
  • Experience in planning and monitoring engineering work;
  • Experience in human resources management;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in both French and English;
  • Ability to analyze an organization in terms of competence, structure and process and to propose plans to improve its effectiveness;
  • Proactive with a sense of technical and human leadership, you listen to your teams, to guide them, support them and ensure their development;
  • Knowledge of Agile techniques and its various frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) is an asset;
  • Good understanding of the aviation industry is an asset;
  • Good team spirit.

This position requires a good command of English to interact with, support, and/or provide services to international clients, employees, and/or partners, as well as to foreign government authorities who do not speak French.

Education level: Bachelor's/Master's degree
