The role requires deep knowledge and extensive experience overseeing the creation, planning, implementation, quality control, and analysis of complex technical projects. The incumbent must be able to identify and define risks and issues early in the project lifecycle and escalate them to the appropriate teams or sponsors as needed. The successful candidate must also ensure project outcomes meet stakeholder expectations for schedule, scope, and budget, in accordance with Air Canada’s project management methodologies and frameworks. This includes maintaining standards related to management practices to mitigate risks associated with ongoing business transformations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple technology projects from design through final implementation, including transition to steady‑state teams.
  • Handle day‑to‑day operational aspects of project management to ensure project scope, quality control, and financial oversight are maintained.
  • Engage appropriate stakeholders so they define and manage the required business and IT project outcomes.
  • Support definition of business and technical requirements so that all project documentation, artifacts, and intended outcomes are approved and meet business and technical needs.
  • Create and maintain a master project roadmap that includes workflows, major activities, milestones, due dates, owners, and dependencies; use project management tools and skills to set project timelines, track assigned tasks, monitor scope changes, and control project progress and financials.
  • Maintain continuous communication with key stakeholders, including the project sponsor, cross‑enterprise product owner, technical product owner, and case lead, to ensure they are informed in a timely manner of significant changes in project status.
  • Communicate regularly with the project team to describe the work breakdown structure, assign responsibilities and tasks, set deadlines, and coordinate all project activities, including changes.
  • Track and manage the project budget and expenditures, keep forecasts accurate, ensure costs are controlled, explain variances, and ensure invoices are paid.
  • Establish and update performance measures, indicators, benchmarks, and project guidelines so project resources are used appropriately and in accordance with Air Canada’s project management quality assurance standards.
  • Coordinate regularly with other project and program managers involved in different initiatives to foster mutual awareness where project timelines, interdependencies, common challenges, and best practices are aligned.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on all aspects of project development, status, and delivery objectives, and keep them up to date.
  • Effectively communicate project progress to various levels of leadership. Assess project‑related risk events and escalate to the appropriate level when necessary to ensure proper resolution.
  • Contribute to the development of governance methods and related practices, including the use of risk, dependency, issue, change management, and decision logs, and ensure compliance and sponsorship of these methods.
  • Advise and guide the project team as needed on project management best practices.
  • Act as a leader by coaching project team members in the exchange of project management best practices.
  • Conduct project retrospectives to capture lessons learned and document them.

  • At least five years of experience managing complex projects.
  • Project management certification from a recognized organization is required.
  • Experience using Agile and Scrum methodologies is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to work in a cross‑functional environment, communicate concisely and effectively, build consensus, and manage complex projects in a similar environment.
  • Strong relationship management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage both strategic and tactical plans simultaneously while operating in a constantly transforming business context.
  • Punctuality and reliability to support the overall success of the team in a fast‑paced environment.
