We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Consumption Tax Manager to join our taxation team. Reporting to the Director, Consumption Tax Planning, Policies and Procedures, the successful candidate will act as a strategic advisor for complex indirect tax matters affecting Air Canada and its subsidiaries. In this role, you will help strengthen tax governance, support major business and transformation initiatives, manage tax risks, and work closely with Finance, Legal, Procurement, Information Technology and Operations teams to implement practical, value-added tax solutions.

Responsibilities:
Tax Advice, Planning and Risk Management
- Act as an expert in Canadian and U.S. consumption taxes, including GST/HST, QST, provincial sales taxes, U.S. sales and use taxes, excise taxes and other transactional taxes relevant to an airline's operations.
- Provide clear, business-driven advice regarding new products, commercial agreements, operational changes, business expansion and other strategic initiatives. Identify tax planning and recovery opportunities while evaluating and mitigating tax risks.
- Interpret laws, regulations, administrative positions and jurisprudence, then translate technical requirements into practical recommendations.
- Proactively communicate the financial and operational impacts of significant transactions, projects and legislative changes to the Director and key stakeholders.
Governance, Compliance and Audits
- Develop, maintain and improve tax policies, procedures, controls, decision frameworks and documentation standards to ensure consistent compliance.
- Collaborate with the Consumption Tax Compliance team during audits, inquiries, voluntary disclosures, refund claims and requests from Canadian and U.S. tax authorities.
- Lead the resolution of complex tax issues and coordinate complete, accurate and timely responses with internal teams, external advisors and government authorities.
- Monitor legislative and administrative changes, assess their impacts and lead the implementation of required modifications in affected processes and systems.
- Ensure robust audit trails, data integrity and retention of evidence supporting tax positions, returns and tax recoveries.
Contracts, Systems and Business Partnership
- Review sales, purchase, service and other commercial agreements to confirm appropriate tax treatment, tax clauses, invoicing requirements and required documentation.
- Work closely with Finance, Revenue Accounting, Procurement, Legal, IT, Commercial and Operations teams to integrate tax requirements into business processes.
- Provide tax leadership in system and data initiatives (implementations, enhancements, integrations, system testing and data quality/correction initiatives, including transaction mapping and reporting requirements).
- Identify and implement process improvements and responsible automation opportunities to increase accuracy, efficiency, controls and stakeholder experience.
- Develop and deliver training, prepare technical guidelines and reference tools, and provide awareness activities for Tax colleagues and business partners.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance or law, or a recognized accounting designation.
- Background in consumption taxes or a graduate diploma in taxation is an asset.
- Minimum of seven years of experience in consumption taxes, including significant experience in Canada and practical exposure to U.S. sales and use taxes.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial consumption tax legislation, including GST/HST, QST, provincial sales taxes and excise taxes.
- Good knowledge of U.S. state and local sales and use taxes; experience with multi-jurisdictional sales tax requirements and compliance is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex laws, exercise sound judgment and formulate clear recommendations in ambiguous situations or those requiring rapid intervention.
- Strong project management, analytical, organizational and stakeholder management skills, as well as the ability to influence without direct authority.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to explain technical tax concepts to non-specialist audiences and work effectively with various teams.
- Proven punctuality and reliability to foster the team's overall success in a fast-paced environment.
