The Director of Engineering's primary mission is to ensure technical governance and compliance with standards (HSE, business rules, certification requirements), to guarantee program performance (adherence to budgets and deliverable conformity), to lead digital transformation and develop engineering capabilities, while demonstrating strategic thinking and high emotional intelligence to unite teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Governance and Compliance: Ensure compliance with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards, business rules, technical and certification requirements. Ensure technical consistency, harmonization of methods and tools, and monitoring of departmental processes.
- Performance Management: Ensure programs meet budgets and schedules. Guarantee conformity of engineering deliverables (definitions, technical solutions, certification reports) and manage waiver processing. Define, jointly with Quality, action plans to ensure the airworthiness of delivered products when out of specification.
- Transformation and Continuous Improvement: Lead digital transformation and the integration of new engineering tools (Industry 4.0). Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing quality.
- Program and R&D Support: Produce impact analyses in support of change requests (internal and external) and associated definition changes. Support tendering and R&D activities for the Canadian subsidiary. Develop and validate test plans with laboratories.
- Skills Development: Define recruitment strategies and use of subcontracting. Implement a training program to develop engineering technical skills aligned with strategic needs.
- Collaboration and Visibility: Promote an inclusive work environment and support talent retention. Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Methods and Procurement departments. Provide visibility to management and the program (technical summaries, progress status, risks and opportunities). Support Airbus's global sustainability initiatives.
Profile Sought
The candidate profile for the Director of Engineering role requires a mix of technical expertise, significant experience and strong leadership skills.
Education and Experience
- Holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
- Approximately 15 years' equivalent experience in similar roles in the aerospace sector.
Technical Knowledge and Tools
- Mastery of aeronautical design processes and methods (including those of AIRBUS Atlantic, BOMBARDIER, and AIRBUS Canada).
- In-depth knowledge of stress analysis and certification of primary and secondary structures and system installations.
- Knowledge of airworthiness requirements (TCCA, FAA, EASA) and configuration management rules.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, manufacturing requirements, and consideration of part and assembly tolerancing.
- Proficiency with design (CAD) and product lifecycle management (PLM) tools such as Catia V5/V6, 3DExperience, or Enovia.
Skills and Leadership
- Highly advanced bilingualism (English/French, spoken and written) and strong communication skills.
- Strategic mindset, results-oriented, and strong business acumen (ability to analyze decision impacts).
- Strong change management skills and mastery of continuous improvement principles.
- Ability to think and operate in a matrix environment (stakeholders, suppliers, customers, plants across multiple continents).
- Demonstrated leadership, high emotional intelligence, and ability to inspire and motivate highly skilled engineering teams.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage unforeseen situations calmly and responsively, and unite beyond hierarchical ties.
