Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defense & Security has a vacancy for a Program Engineer - Electrical to support its non-combatant in-service support programs for the Royal Canadian Navy, mainly the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPVs) and Joint Support Ships (JSS) In-Service (AJISS) Program.

As part of the AJISS Engineering team, the primary role of the Program Engineer - Electrical is to support the Coastal Support team and the Service Delivery team with the management of defects for the AOPVs and JSS. The role also supports the greater Engineering and Supportability Teams with various activities such as margin management, creation of deviations and waivers, and surveys onboard the ships while alongside.

The role may also be called upon to support the Minor War & Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) program, including defect rectification, surveys and development and implementation of engineering changes.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Assigned tasks are to be completed in accordance with Thales quality and commercial guidelines, contracted time and cost requirements. This includes but is not limited to performing the following:

  • Developing and reviewing electrical and electronic system technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance job instructions.
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with electrical systems, equipment and/or software issues, including root cause analyses, risk assessments and solution development.
  • Preparing documented work scopes associated with defect investigation/resolution, suitable for soliciting quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers.
  • Developing and/or approving technical work instructions.
  • Coordinating with other Thales staff (mechanical, combat systems, hull engineering and naval architecture) and/or subcontractors to achieve agreed outcomes within delegated authorities.
  • Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to ship configuration, equipment and software.
  • Conducting electrical load design calculations.
  • Supporting the Engineering Team for the engineering change process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated professional marine work experience within the last 10 years.
  • Language: English (essential).

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8 years of demonstrated professional marine work experience within the last 15 years.
  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard.
  • Experience delivering marine in-service support of operational assets.
  • Experience working with a defense contract.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Jira.
  • Language: French (desirable as a first or second language).

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week.
  • Work Location: Hybrid — required to work from the Thales office or the dockyard (about 80% of the time) and from home (about 20%).
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships.

Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), inclusive of annual salary and bonus eligibility, for this role is $85,000 to $120,000 CAD per year. The company reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation depending on circumstances.
