Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security, is at the forefront of supporting Canada's maritime security through the development and implementation of the Interdepartmental Maritime Integrated Command, Control, and Communications (IMIC3) system. This state-of-the-art technology will revolutionize how Canada's Navy and Coast Guard commanders collaborate, providing them with advanced tools to protect the nation's coastline by enabling the secure exchange of real-time data among vessels and onshore operations centers.

Thales has a vacancy for an IMIC3 Junior Systems Engineer. This opportunity is within our Systems Engineering group at our Ottawa office. The Junior Systems Engineer will support deployment, configuration, and maintenance of core system components as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Duties include IT responsibilities such as managing COTS software applications, maintaining Windows operating systems, PowerShell scripting, and maintenance of firewalls and server racks. The role also involves management of customer documentation to ensure concise and accurate information.

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Systems Engineers integrate sensors, software, firmware, and applications on commercial and military platforms. Essential functions and responsibilities include:

• Tailor the systems engineering process, practices and tools.
• Provide timely and accurate status updates.
• Develop preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements.
• Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and design reviews.
• Author technical documentation capturing architecture, interfaces, and installation elements.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure designs meet end-user needs.
• Collaborate with other functions during implementation and integration.
• Resolve technical issues arising during implementation, integration and testing.
• Support installation and integration testing of systems remotely or on customer site.

Typical duties for this project include:

• Installing and configuring servers and software.
• Managing hardware and software obsolescence.
• Authoring documentation.
• Creating tools for customers to upgrade their configurations.
• Answering technical questions for customers and product management.
• Supporting configuration and maintenance of a test lab for the team.
• Writing PowerShell scripts.
• Contributing to quotes and estimates for upcoming tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to succeed in cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to obtain clearances as specified under the Regulatory Compliance section.

Education

• University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following areas is an asset:

• Windows operating system experience.
• Creating, updating or applying system images.
• PowerShell scripting.
• Experience with Windchill or other configuration management tools.
• Experience with DOORS or other requirements management tools.
• Experience with Git or other source control tools.

Special Position Requirements

• Schedule: 40 hours per week.
• Physical environment: On-site work may occasionally be required at the shipyard.
• Travel: Limited travel to Canada’s coasts is expected.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is Total Target Cash 65,000.00 - 90,000 CAD Annual. This range is provided as a guide and final offer will depend on factors such as experience, skills, performance and business considerations.
