JOB PURPOSE:

The Chief Pilot supervises flight crew members, including pilots and flight attendants, to ensure the highest standards of safety, regulatory compliance, professionalism and operational efficiency. This role works closely with the Flight Operations and Maintenance teams to support the smooth execution of flight operations while ensuring compliance with company policies and Transport Canada requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES SUMMARY:

  • Develop and maintain safe and effective Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring that, where possible, aircraft operating procedures reflect a high degree of standardization and uniformity across all types of aircraft operated.
  • Ensure that flight crew members meet the regulatory requirements applicable to their assigned duties.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, coaching and performance management of flight crew members to ensure the safe, compliant, professional and consistent execution of their duties in accordance with company policies, SOPs, the Commercial Operations Manual and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical data for new routes and aerodromes, assess their operational suitability and provide required training prior to entry into service.
  • Keep aircraft operating manuals and Minimum Equipment Lists (MEL) up to date.
  • Issue operational directives, notices and bulletins to flight crew members regarding aircraft operations.
  • Process, analyze and follow up on mission, accident, incident and operational event reports.
  • Monitor the progress of pilots during probationary periods and make recommendations to the Director of Flight Operations regarding their performance and continued employment.
  • Support the Safety Management System (SMS) program as needed, with particular emphasis on information flow.
  • Ensure all pilots comply with the company's security policy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Hold a valid Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), a valid Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) qualification for an airplane subject to Subpart 4 of Part VII of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), and a valid medical certificate meeting applicable requirements.
  • Hold a type rating on at least one of the aircraft types operated, where applicable.
  • Have a minimum of three (3) years' experience as captain on a regional (commuter) transport aircraft, as defined in paragraph 1.1.2 of the Commercial Operations Manual (COM).
  • Prior management experience in a commercial aviation environment governed by Subparts 704 or 705 of the CARs is strongly preferred.
  • Be qualified under the company's training program to act as captain on one of the types of aircraft operated.
  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of the Commercial Operations Manual, SOPs and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate to the Minister sufficient knowledge of the Commercial Operations Manual, training manuals, SOPs, the company check pilot manual (where applicable), and the regulations and standards necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Maintain a record free of accidents, incidents or regulatory violations.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in high-pressure operational environments.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Exhibit sound judgment, professionalism and emotional intelligence.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead effectively in a context of operational change and complexity.
