The Product Owner – IT – Human Resources Technology is responsible from start to finish for the configuration and continuous improvement of human resources technology solutions, primarily holding responsibility for the Dayforce time and attendance management system and payroll-related functionalities.
The person occupying this position acts as the functional owner of the assigned human resources systems and serves as the primary liaison between Human Resources, Payroll, Operations, Digital Products, IT, and third-party vendors. This position combines product owner responsibilities with concrete operational accountability to ensure system stability, regulatory compliance, and business readiness within a complex, unionized, and fast-paced environment.
The Product Owner works within an Agile delivery model and contributes to the implementation of scalable, secure, and user-centric solutions that support Air Canada's workforce and operational objectives.
Responsibilities:
Product Ownership and Stakeholder Management
- Act as the primary contact person for stakeholders, providing functional direction and decision-making regarding system capabilities and improvements.
- Ensure that the product backlog aligns with stakeholder needs and the Chief Product Officer's vision to maximize the value delivered by the team.
- Work closely with relevant stakeholders to gather information and use it to improve the operational performance of Air Canada's Central Services space, focusing on attendance management.
- Evaluate, document, and communicate the commercial and operational impacts of proposed system modifications, as well as their compliance impact.
Functional and Operational Responsibility of the Dayforce System
- Assume responsibility for the functional configuration of the Dayforce time and attendance management system, including pay rules, work schedules, time management policies, attendance rules, and leave programs.
- Assume responsibility for day-to-day tasks related to time management, exception management, punch corrections, and support within complex schedule planning scenarios.
- Manage Dayforce security and role-based access rights regarding time entry, approvals, and reporting.
- Act as an escalation point of contact for complex or high-risk issues related to attendance management functionality.
Compliance, Controls, and Reporting
- Ensure system configurations comply with employment standards, collective agreements, payroll governance, and internal control requirements.
- Produce, validate, and analyze reports related to time, attendance, overtime, and payroll to support operational supervision and audit activities.
- Support internal and external audit missions by providing data, analysis, and subject matter expertise.
Delivery, Testing, and Agile Execution
- Translate business needs into clear functional requirements and user stories.
- Continuously provide functional clarifications and decision support throughout delivery cycles.
- Plan and direct User Acceptance Testing (UAT) as well as regression testing for enhancements, configuration changes, and new vendor releases.
- Participate in Agile team activities, including product backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives, in accordance with Digital Products delivery practices.
Change Management, Support, and Continuous Improvement
- Support vendor upgrades, patch releases, and the deployment of new features.
- Contribute to end-user enablement through documentation, training materials, and stakeholder communication.
- Identify and implement opportunities for management method improvement through automation, configuration optimization, and effective data utilization.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in information systems, business, human resources, accounting, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three to five years of experience as a Product Owner, Systems Analyst, Consultant, or holder of a position in human resources technology within a large enterprise or complex organization.
- Hands-on experience supporting or administering the Dayforce Workforce Management (WFM) system, with functional expertise in attendance management.
- Proven experience configuring the Dayforce attendance management system in unionized or regulated environments.
- Practical knowledge of payroll activities, integrations, upstream and downstream system interdependencies, and reporting impacts.
- Experience with software development lifecycle tools such as Jira and Confluence.

- Proficiency in work management and documentation tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, and proven ability to collaborate effectively with different teams.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to translate business requirements into efficient management system solutions.
- Ability to balance strategic responsibility and operational accountability.
- Demonstrated punctuality and reliability to foster the team's overall success in a fast-paced environment.
Assets
- Experience supporting payroll cycles or payroll period-end close activities.
- Professional experience gained in a unionized or 24/7 operational environment.
- Knowledge of human resources systems used in the airline or transportation industry or by large enterprises.
