Reporting to the Director – Crew Planning, the Specialist – Advanced Analytics – Crews occupies a strategic, results-oriented position. He must advance the team's use of advanced data science and machine learning to solve complex crew planning challenges. The incumbent must design and deploy reusable data science assets on a large scale, implementing various analytical techniques – ranging from descriptive analysis to prescriptive modeling – to optimize areas such as reserve models, schedule design and their impact on operational resilience, as well as the productivity of crew assignment. Acting as a liaison between the business, IT and Engineering teams, this person proposes end-to-end solutions, from design to production, ensures compliance with technical standards and stimulates innovation by leveraging emerging technologies and large and complex data sets to generate actionable information that supports key operational initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop high-quality, intuitive analytical solutions to complex business problems (such as reserve optimization models) to drive operational efficiency and evaluate the cost-benefits of proposed solutions.
  • Encourage innovation in various analytical projects, particularly related to strategy, advanced modeling, data mining, comprehensive monitoring of the participation structure, as well as management and expected achievements of the team.
  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts within Air Canada to identify new ways to leverage data to adjust analytical needs and actionable project intelligence, in order to influence business priorities and strategic initiatives, such as aligning pilot assignments with network strategy.
  • Provide detailed insight into analytical opportunities to management to help business units make informed operational decisions regarding current and future organizational needs.
  • Lead the definition and governance of key measures, guide the vision and creation of the crew analytics team.
  • Follow best practices for future reuse in the form of accessible and reusable models, templates and codebases.
  • Act as process improvement leader when it comes to data science and analytics; keep abreast of best practices to improve crew efficiency and crew assignment productivity or correct model deficiencies.
  • Provide strategic and technical leadership, and lead projects to explore new and existing data sources to drive value creation and innovation.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation in data analytics practices.
  • Demonstrate initiative, strong commitment to achieving significant results and seize opportunities to create value.
  • Hire, manage, develop, mentor and support a highly skilled team of Data Engineering Analysts and Reporting Analysts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative or technical field (statistics, mathematics, data science, engineering, etc.); master's or doctorate, an asset.
  • At least five years of experience in functions related to data science, advanced analytics or applied machine learning, with experience in analytics focused on business needs.
  • Strong experience in processing large and complex data sets; proficiency in SQL, Python and other relevant programming languages.
  • Experience in applying statistical modeling and machine learning techniques, such as regression models, tree models and optimization methods.
  • Basic knowledge of demand forecasting, elasticity modeling, promotion analysis or scenario modeling.
  • Knowledge of analytics development in Databricks and the Azure data ecosystem, an asset.
  • In-depth proficiency in data visualization tools, such as Power BI (preferably) or Tableau.
  • Ability to clearly communicate analytical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proactive spirit, ability to manage uncertain situations, take initiatives and propose new analytical approaches or areas for improvement to optimize business results.
  • Proven punctuality and reliability to promote overall team success in a fast-paced environment.

Terms of employment:

Candidates must be eligible to work in the relevant country at the time an offer of employment is made and are responsible for obtaining necessary work permits, visas or other authorizations. Proof of eligibility must be provided prior to the start date.
